Drug Rehab Can t Help Millions of Children Deluged By Prescription Drugs

If you disagree with drugging America"s children for almost anything that seems wrong with them, you"re not alone. Millions of parents are fighting back at the indiscriminate use of mind-altering and addictive pharmaceuticals on kids. But nothing much has changed in the last 100 years. We"ve been drugging our kids since the late 1800s, long before the term "drug rehab" was even invented.
For example, no parent today would give their infants and children "Dr. Tucker"s Asthma Specific", a patent medicine from the early 1900s which contained large amounts of cocaine? Or how about "Dr. Fahrney"s Teething Syrup" made with morphine, or "Dr. James" Soothing Syrup" made with heroin, or "Dr. Moffett"s Teething Powder" made from opium? And of course, most patent medicines of the day were heavily laced with alcohol.
We don"t want to turn our kids into drug addicts who need drug detox and drug rehab before they even start grade school!
Or do we?
Until recently, children could be denied education because their parents refused to put them on narcotics, antidepressants, stimulants and other drugs - drugs that we now know cause violent behavior and increased risk of suicide, according to the FDA, the same kind of drugs that have sent thousands of teens and adults into drug rehab while earning Big Pharma billions.
More than 10 million children in the United States are still being prescribed addictive stimulants, antidepressants and other mind-altering pharmaceuticals for educational and behavioral problems - more billions for Big Pharma, and more fodder for drug detox and drug rehab programs later on, provided the kids survive long enough.
And talk about needing drug detox and drug rehab to avoid drug-related disasters - psychoactive mind-altering and addictive pharmaceuticals have been implicated in 8 out of 13 cases of student school shootings.
Today, children 5 years old and younger are the fastest-growing segment of the non-adult population prescribed antidepressants in the US. Kids as young as 4 have attempted suicide while influenced by such drugs. And 5-year-olds have actually committed suicide. Millions of kids are still forced to take stimulants, mostly prescribed for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a whole list other childhood "disorders", none of which are based on any real science. These children are going to need drug detox at the very least, and possibly drug rehab if their drug use accelerates into addiction later in their lives.
Stimulants like Ritalin, says the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), have the same potential for abuse as morphine, opium and cocaine. Studies show that Ritalin is more potent than cocaine, and affects the brain in exactly the same way. Its side-effects include anorexia, heart irregularities, weight loss and psychosis - and hundreds of related deaths over the past decade. And many thousands of teenagers who should be in drug rehab are stealing, selling and even trading lunches and concert tickets for Ritalin just to get high.
If it"s true that we don"t want our kids winding up in drug rehab before they even leave high school, then why in the world do we allow it to continue?
Well, did you notice that every one of those addictive poisons from the last century had the term "Dr." in the name of it? Could it be that now, just as in the early 1900s when doctors handed out morphine, heroin, opium and cocaine for babies, that we still think "doctors can"t be wrong"?
Hey, reality check, people. Doctors can be just as wrong as the rest of us. The total number of deaths from medical mistakes of all kinds in this country is more than heart disease or cancer. In fact, the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the US, and misadventures surrounding Big Pharma"s products are near the top of the list. And let"s not forget that some of the first clients for drug rehab were doctors who had "self-medicated" and got hooked.
Parents have the right to protect their children and themselves from the irresponsible, profit-driven self interests of the biggest drug pushers in the world, Big Pharma, and their street-level dealers the psychiatrists, and some general practitioners, who continue to promote and prescribe these drugs even though they know perfectly well the risks of side-effects, addiction and drug rehab.
Americans need to wake up, speak up, and demand some changes, or we will continue to be a nation needing drug detox and a drug rehab program from the cradle to the grave.
