The term "Diabetes Mellitus" refers to a metabolic disorder with a condition known as hyperglycaemia. Here defects occur in the level of insulin in the human body in terms of its secretion as well as its functions. As a result, the levels of carbohydrate, fat and protein as well as metabolism is affected in the body.
Diabetes mellitus results in failure of various organs such as kidney, heart, eyes etc. The symptoms include blurred vision, weight loss, thirst, polyuria etc. If left alone, the defect might even result in severe coma and death.

Another prospective area of research is to establish the relationship between obesity and the final level of diabetes mellitus condition.
The reasons why research in diabetes has become extremely important are many. In the United States alone, about 6 to 7% of the population suffers from diabetes mellitus. It is estimated that this number will increase manifold within a period of ten years. The deaths due to diabetes have found to be increased by a whopping 30% in the past 12 years! Also diabetic retinopathy has been the major cause of blindness in adults. The diabetes affected individuals are 2 to 4 times more prone to heart diseases than others. Diabetes also causes special problems in pregnancies.
Research in diabetes mellitus has seen considerable progress. Many molecular steps have been found and analyzed in the series of insulin action and as a result many undesirable components of the secretion of insulin have been elucidated.
The researchers have now understood the complexities in the genetic components, interactions as well as variations and molecular actions of diabetes mellitus. However research on identifying and understanding the basic systems and actions that cause shortage of insulin secretion in the human body. This will directly help in finding cures and preventive mechanisms for diabetes mellitus.
Obesity increases the risk of diabetes mellitus and is also found to be a common problem especially in United States. The metabolic and environmental factors that impact the intake of food and the spending of calories and body energy must be analyzed as part of research in diabetes mellitus. Thus a number of developments have been made in diabetes mellitus research and scope for further intensive research still exists.
