The Bridal Shower

The bridal shower has been around for years. According to legend, the shower was originally intended to help the couple with gifts to get them started in their new life as husband and wife. Now days, we still throw the shower and traditional gifts are still often given, but with a flair. It's popular to have a theme for the bride's shower, and plan one special party before the big day. After paying for everything connected to a large wedding, especially that Vera Wang original, the happy couple may need all the help they can get.
A couple ideas for themes that have actually been around for a while, but with a twist, can spin off the original purpose of the bridal shower, which was to stock the bride and groom's home with necessities. If the bride is in to cooking, target the kitchen as your theme. Have everyone bring unique items that she wouldn't buy for herself, but fits her personality, for gourmet cooking. Go in together and add a gift certificate for a special class at a local cooking school.
Bed and bath - if you know her colors and her taste, the skies the limit. Down comforter set, sheets, decorative pillows, accent lamps, essential oils and holders, towel sets, soaps, lotions, air fresheners, plush his and her robes, candles, candle holders, bath oils. These are a few items that could be selected for a Bed and Bath theme shower that any bride would love. There are stores and departments specifically devoted to these two rooms, let your imagination run wild.
A theme that was very popular when I was married in the 60's, and is still going strong, is lingerie. A women can never have too much lingerie! And the gift possibilities are limitless with this theme. Just one thing to remember, if the bride is a conservative, shy young woman, you want to choose your lingerie accordingly. But, if the bride is a free spirit, up for anything, you're OK to include some of the racier items shown in lingerie shops. This might be a good opportunity for everyone to see the gorgeous designer wedding gown for the special day, too.
There's a relatively new trend in showers, the couples shower. It's sometimes referred to as the "Jack and Jill" shower. You could design this shower after the couples love of a certain activity. If they love wine, for example, organize a wine tasting party and have everyone bring gifts that are appropriate to the theme.
Whatever the theme, remember the object of the shower is to gather friends and family together and have a party that will be a memorable occasion for the bride.
