Benefits of Yoga Practice for Middle-Aged People

With the explosion of numerous journals relating to health and fitness, it is no surprise that there would be material written on the positive effects yoga has on health. Tons of stuff showing an almost immediate helpful result for the heart, blood pressure, muscles. Recent studies show that if you practice yoga, it will help prevent some major problems associated with people in their middle ages. Now that's a good deal!

Regular yoga practice can help flatten the stomach area.

Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center conducted a study that showed 30 minutes of consistent yoga practice done over a period of four years led to weight loss for overweight middle-aged individuals.

Researchers had looked into the data collected from 15,500 men and women in the age group of 45 and 55 years. An interesting point to note here is that individuals who had regular yoga practice sessions gained 3 pounds less than those of their counterparts. The effect of yoga was the most on obese people of this age group. In the span of ten years, obese people of the age group had lost about 10 pounds more than the people of the same age group who did not schedule regular yoga practice time.

It is credited that only a vigorous session of yoga can cause weight loss, regular yoga practitioners did not do vigorous yoga. Studies would indicate that the resulting weight loss is due not to yoga exercise, but how yoga makes you aware of your body.
